Dark Wing--Darkside Gold Wing (car tire on a Gold Wing)
|
|
Many of you know that I am a "Darksider." What that means is that I run a nice, fat, juicy car-tire on the rear end of my Valkyrie. I do this for a variety of reasons, but the short of it is that I'm an aggressive rider, pushing my Valkyrie to its limits in a variety of severe conditions...most of those very far from home. My choice of tires enables me to to that.
So, today it was time for tires on my friend Dean's 2002 Honda Gold Wing. He's seen my success with the Valkyie and decided to give it a try. This article is not attempting to discuss the merits or reasoning behind this. Those of you that want more information...or really want to know why somebody would consider doing this, I discuss that (and go on and on and on and on) at this link: Darkside Valkyrie. The reasons are the same for any heavy cruiser.
Putting a Darkside tire on a Gold Wing is no big deal. Pull the wheel, mount the tire, stick it back on. No mods are necessary. The tire size is 195/50/16.
The Old Tire

Comparison of the two tires
The New Tire (A kick-ass Dunlop SP Sport FM901) I think he paid $80 for it.
Mounted and Balanced

Installed on the Wing. Plenty of clearance all around.
The New Tire, Up Close and Personal

After the install, Dean took her for a ride. "No major difference in handling," was his comment.
He had a big ole grin on his face though. I guess I owe him a cookie.

Oh, yeah...I should probably post this pic for all those that will email me to tell me how unsafe car tires are and how safe and well designed the OEM tires are (afterall, those engineers chose this design for a reason, yes? Well, yes. Price. Thanks.)
This would make 10 MC tire failures I've experienced or helped folks deal with that were due to defective tires or design in the last 18 months. I've also returned 2 of 4 Avon fronts for my Valkyrie (50% return rate) in the same period due to defects. The OEM tires on my Valk didn't make it to the first oil change. Soooo...tell me how safe the bike tires are again?
